How and How Much to Decorate at Christmas?
At the heart of the family Christmas is the way you express your joy and festive exuberance in the Christmas decorations you use in your home. Every inch of your house can be decorated – at least there is a product out there for every niche and cranny – and prices vary as much as styles.
Some people choose to go the whole hog and decorate every fir tree in their yard and cover every square inch of the exterior of their home. Others choose to make a simple Christmas light string display. Both approaches can be equally effective, but they will express different things about you and your family’s Christmas celebration. Some displays are also dependent on the amount of space you have available, or decide to make available.
Who Chooses the Christmas Light String
Families with small children usually choose to decorate the whole house and lawn if possible and get a Christmas tree as well. After all, where are they going to gather on Christmas day to open the presents? The simple Xmas light string is usually chosen by single people who want to feel the spirit of Christmas but don’t want to go through all that trouble as they may not even spend Christmas at their place after all.
Everyone however utilizes some sort of lights arranged in a string including those who choose to do large scale decorations and those who choose to keep it low-key. The Christmas light string can give life to a Christmas tree; whether it is the biggest tree or the smallest, it is the Xmas light string that brings it out in its full glory.

Flexible Christmas Light Strings
They come in strings as small or as long as you need, but remember that the bulbs are arranged in series, which means that if one bulb goes, the whole light string will go dark. Finding that dead bulb can take a long time if your light string is long. In our family, we use Christmas light strings to surround the windows and doors, but there’s nothing stopping you putting them up anywhere in reach of a plug socket. The Christmas lights come in the traditional Christmas colours of red, yellow, green and blue; some flicker and other have a Christmas tune that plays non-stop when the lights are on, which can be quite annoying at night or if you are watching TV but, a great party starter for Christmas day.
One benefit is that these decorations do not consume much power so you can leave them on all night long if you choose. In fact that is yet another great thing about Christmas, if you drive around after dark and it’s cold outside, you can see brightly lit Christmas trees spreading Christmas cheer, offering the promise of a warm hearth when you get home. The Christmas light string is a gentle reminder of the season and looks especially inviting if outside and snow is falling.
Dancing Around the Christmas Tree
The Christmas light string is one of the fundamental building blocks of modern festive decoration. It is flexible, cheap to buy and run, and its appeal is universal. As a decorative element it can be as brash or understated as you like. If there is a moment when you open your doors and throw a party, then light strings that flash, flicker and even pump out popular carols can make the occasion, especially if children are involved. In our family, we dance around the Xmas tree before opening our presents, which is a Danish tradition that is as old as the Christmas tree itself. After we’ve sung the traditional dance-around-the-Christmas-tree song, a flashing light string belting out jingle bells can offer some much appreciated comic relief. Just as long as you remember to turn it off afterwards.
